About my images

I use a variety of cameras - film and digital, to obtain my images. I tend to select the camera that's best suited to the image. It might be film - a panoramic, toy plastic, or wooden 4 x 5 field camera - or digital. Given the relatively low amount of film I use (all FUJI Velivia or Provia colour transparency), Colourgenics in Toronto does all my processing.

I use Adobe Lightroom and/or Photoshop to process the images. This includes image cleanup, colour correction or black and white conversion, contrast and colour saturation adjustments. Beyond that, what you see is what was in front of the camera when I took the picture.

George deWolfe, author of Digital Photography Fine Print Workshop makes the point that "Only the photogapher who took the picture can print an honest and authentic artistic statement about the image."  I agree, and print all my own work, using my own large format Epson Stylus Pro printers, Ultrachrome K3 inks, and a variety of matte finish fine art papers, most of which are 100% rag cotton stock from Epson, MOAB and Hahnemühle. I find the matte finish adds a softer, more painterly look while preserving the essential details of the image. And, there's nothing like having a 6-foot wide 200 pound printer in my dining room, under which my dog likes to hide during thunderstorms.

I edition my work in series of 15 to 25 prints, now printed within the series in a variety of sizes. Previously I had printed separate series for different image sizes. Images are professionally framed to archival specifications, and accompanied by my certificate of authenticity. Essentially I'm guaranteeing all framed prints for the duration, as long as the buyer follows  the usual guidelines around exposure to sunlight, humidity, and so on.
